Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Black Cat,' 'The Tell-Tale Heart' and 'The Cask of Amontillado' In each of Edgar Allen Poe's stories of murder and madness, he takes us inside the mind of the murderer from the time he begins until after the deed has been done. Poe gives us a point of view not common in works of horror and suspense: the killers. We read the thoughts and follow the actions of the killer as he plots and follows through with his victim?s demise. All three of his stories are alike, especially 'The Black Cat' and 'The Tell-Tale Heart.' However, I found that 'The Cask of Amontillado' differ more than any of the other two from each other. While the murderers in 'The Black Cat' and 'The Tell-Tale Heart' are motivated by their own insanity, the character in 'The Cask of Amontillado' is driven by pure, old-fashioned revenge and jealousy. A couple main details I noticed about all three tales is that each story is told in first person, and all of the main characters are male. Also, in the end of each of these short stories all men turn out to be no better, if not much wo rse, than they already were. The ?Tell-Tale Heart? begins with the murderer raving about his sanity, and that he commits the crime not because of lunacy but for his master?s ?Evil-Eye.? The man describes the eye as if it is a separate entity from the old man, and if it weren?t for the eye he would have nothing against his master. The eye being attached to the old man is just an unfortunate detail. In the following quote the man describes his feelings towards the Evil-Eye and what he decided to do about it: ?Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees-very gradually-I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself ... ...d in some part of the home of each of the murderers. Also, in both of ?The Tell-Tale Heart? and ?The Cask of Amontillado? the killer?s guilty consciences eventually caused some sort of confession of their crimes. The man in the first story was driven mad into confessing from an imaginary heart beat, and the man in the latter is left to believe his conscience is what caused him to write his story confessing his crime. Both men in ?The Tell-Tale Heart? and ?The Black Cat? were extremely confident in their job hiding the bodies, and almost bragging at their job at hiding the body. However, in all three stories the men were punished in some way. The first two stories I described had the law punishing the two men. The final story I described the man was never caught by the authorities for his crime, but instead he had to deal with the weight from his guilty conscience.

There are many stereotypes that pertain to black people. One that really stands out is â€Å"If you want to hide something from a black person hide it in a book† which the white man is trying to call us African Americans illiterate. Which is ignorant is so many type of ways. But yet we do nothing more to make that statement false by not being educated, well organized and full of wisdom. Years ago, when slavery was in its actions African Americans where always thought of as less. White people came up with the assumption that black people where only good for three things; sex which they’d rape most of the women, singing, because they made them perform as entertainment, and sports because African Americans were always â€Å"active†. Which shows you that African Americans were nothing more than than serfs (which is another word for someone working labor on it’s owners estate). African American had no real opportunity of living. Reading was against the law for African Americans. They weren’t able to read or to even learn how to read, because the white men didn’t want the slaves to go against or better yet become stronger than them. Fredrick Douglas said â€Å"Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave. â€Å", and the white men knew that. So they stayed uneducated. Which gave the white men even a better reason to think they could take over our brains. From this point on was the way for the whites to start lowering expectations of black people. As of today, African Americans are still looked down on and still are given some of the stereotypes from slavery now. Are generation and before make it no better. With the lack of education, attitude and everything else that’s makes up our community in a negative way. The black on black crimes and violence doesn’t make it even better. It’s basically giving the white men exactly what he set out to happen. The gang violence and fighting just puts the icing on the cake for everything. We are basically confirming what the white me. Is saying because we are not taking any time to read into and make a change. Make it better for no one but ourselves. These assumptions are untrue and the only way we can show that we are the opposite of these stereotype are by making a change starting small and ending big. Ignorance has existed for decades. It not that we can’t do anything about it. But it’s something that’s never going to go away. But one thing we can’t do us loss out sense and pride for our race and culture. At this climax of pain, as the feeling comes to the point where he cant live anymore, he squeezes the trigger. He feels the pain go through his finger into the rifle. The bullet soars with the pain. The relief is instant. The young child of only seven years old falls to the ground. Screams, pain, suffering, enters the lives of the people in the school yard. People duck and cry. As his anger subsides, he slowly lowers the rifle. The calm serenity enters his mind. He is his normal self again. In his room he places his rifle in his closet. He feels that he can eat and sleep now, and he slowly drifts into sleep. He dreams heavily. He knows they are around him, and that he will soon be caught. The police are having their suspicions. He wakes up, sweat engulfs his body, and the wave of fear slowly subsides. His father falls into the small room in their trailer. Drunk again and looking to hit someone. He knows whats coming and feels that new wave of frustration. So many feelings, so many feelings. His father asks where he was that day, and he refuses to respond, which is followed by the usual beatings. No one is there to protect him, or to alleviate his pain. As his father leans over, breathing a strong stench of whisky, aimlessly hitting him again and again with the recently emptied bottle. With one final blow to the head, he feels himself fall into a deep sleep of unconsciousness. It was three oclock in the morning when his father woke up. He felt his inner fluids starting to seep up into his throat. He doesnt remember anything from that night, and he doesnt think for a second that his son is standing there with a rifle to his head looking for revenge. He sees the tears streaking his sons face and never for a second thinks why. He says, in a low tone, to put the rifle down or he will be punished. His brain starts to feel the intensity of the pain. He lets the gun drift a little to the right to allow his father to get a full view of his face. Through his tears and pain he says what his father has done, and that he cannot live with this anymore. His father jumps to show his son who is the boss in the family, and that is the last thought of his life. He runs, runs with all his might, rifle in hand with a full magazine in his pocket. It was nine in the morning on that last bright June day, as Josh assumes his normal position by the school yard. This pain is like n one other, this pain cannot die. He knows this is the end. He cant think for himself anymore, the pain becomes him; the tranquil part of him ceases to exist. The aim is perfect, the targets there. They are his relief, but this is the end. The yard is being watched by more than him through the scope of their guns. They know he is there. Ten kids fall in the yard that day, and not one of them survived, but the pain doesnt exist anymore. He motionlessly lies in the yard with the victims. His body is torn with 9mm bullets. He feels no pain, he is dead. They look at his body and the body of the others, and cry. His pain still exists in them; in the families of many. The many police who have shot him sit by the bodies of the young including him and wonder, why? And that is where the real peace comes, when somebody is there asking, wondering, why?

There are many problems that face the U.S. right now. In most of the recent presidential primary debates, there is a question on what the candidates will do about illegal immigration. The candidate's proposed solutions range from complete amnesty to shipping all illegals back to where they came from. Illegal immigration is a growing problem in America. There are many reasons that illegal immigration is a problem, and as usual what the government has tried to do to solve the problem has just made the situation worse. However there are a few things that can be done to help solve the problem of illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is a problem in this country. The fact is that most illegals do not or will not speak English. The chancellor of the University of California at Berkley, Chang Lin-Tin, says that by the year 2050 most Americans will be able to trace their roots to Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific Islands. However, before Mr. Chang's vision can come to pass, the United States will have at least 2 official languages. America would have to have two official languages for the immigrants to be able to function in society. It is impossible to even buy groceries without knowing English. However, there are several flaws to this idea, the first of which is that not speaking English goes against the purpose of immigrating to America. The purpose of immigrating to America is to become an American. This means that immigrants must adapt to America's way of life, not the other way around. This includes learning English. The whole idea of providing bilingual schooling and such to people who do not speak English does not make sense. If immigrants want to fit into society, they need to change their ways to fit that society, not make the society change to fit them. Still another problem with the idea of two official languages is that it is illogical. The whole purpose of having an official language is so that everyone can communicate and function in society. Having two official languages will completely ruin this system and the country. The U.S. would be split up into two almost separate countries. There would be the English speaking part of the country, and then there would be the Spanish speaking part. Neither of these parts would be able to interact with each other unless everyone knew both languages, and that goes against logic, as everyone would need to learn a new language instead of just the immigrants. In order to exist in peace amongst each other, immigrants should be required to learn English in order to live in the United States. It doesnt make sense for Americans to tip toe around immigrants and change our life style to make it easier for them. Learning English would show dedication and unveil how greatly each immigrant truly desires to live in the United States.
